Decorating Your Bridal Gown and Bridal Party Dresses

Glitz & Glamour has bridesmaid and flower girl dresses you can buy off the rack - you can glitz them up or wear them as is - your choice! We also offer custom dress making and design services. However, if you are the type to do-it-yourself, we'll be glad to help you successfully make your own bridal party dresses. If you know basic/intermediate sewing and can learn a few new techniques, making a dress isn't so difficult.

The most fun part of dressmaking is decorating your finished dress! At GlitzOnline.com, we have hundreds of choices in rhinestones, beaded trims, appliques, and laces to help you from start to finish! The hardest part is choosing which decorations to use! There are so many!

If you're making your own dress, you'll need to start by picking your color and fabric. Not all fabrics come in the color you want, and not all fabrics are dyeable. Sometimes you have to look around before you find the perfect dress fabric that comes in the color you want.

You have a color selected! Now let's find the fabric. For bodices, there are many styles of fabric that are easy to sew and decorate. Some popular choices are two-way stretch lycra, superstretch lycra, and stretch velvet. These not only come in a variety of colors, but they are easy to dye with Rit Dye. (Rit Dye no longer comes in neon pink. We suggest dyeing with Apple Barrel paint if you are trying to match neon pink. You can also get Stretch Velvet in neon pink.) For the best results, find an existing color or find something you can dye with Rit Dye.

For skirt fabrics, Sparkle Organzas hold their shape the best and are by far the most popular skirt material. Another popular skirt material is chiffon - but beware, chiffon is not for the novice seamstress! Chiffon is also not ideal for young children as it hangs and pulls very easily. Go with the organza, you won't be disappointed. Tulle is popular also, but is another one that hangs and rips easily. If you are sewing for young children, these are things you want to keep in mind. The skirt will be the most time consuming and difficult part of the dress - you don't want to make a new one because the old one ripped!

Mrs. Darlene knows everything about everything, so she's the one to talk to about your dress making adventures!

Now - you're ready to decorate that fabulous dress! (whether you created it or not - let's glam it up!) You'll want to start with a great lace and you'll want to dye it to match your dress. This lace will provide depth and design for your rhinestones and trims. You'll want bodice appliques, edging trims, little trims for hair bows, sleeves, and shoes. You can choose beaded lace, pearl and sequin lace, unbeaded lace, or venice lace. Ask Mrs. Darlene if you want to know if a certain style number is dyeable. Keep in mind when you're looking at laces, some of the larger ones can be cut apart either in pieces, sections, or horizontally to make two sizes of trims! The possibilities are endless!

Now you're ready to add the good stuff - the rhinestones! We have loose rhinestones in the easy to glue-on flatback style, or in the pointed back style for maximum sparkle! You can glue on the pointed back rhinestones, they're just a little trickier and require a slightly tackier glue, like E6000. You can get loose rhinestones in a variety of colors, clear crystal, or crystal AB for the MAX sparkle! You can even get rhinetsones covered in real gold, called Aurum Rhinestones. Rhinestones are available in dozens, half gross (6 dozen) and full gross (12 dozen) packages. Smaller rhinestones may not be avilable in dozen packages. You can match your rhinestone color to your dress color if you want, but you can never go wrong with clear crystal or crystal AB rhinestones!

All that is left to do is accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! You can make your own custom accessories such as chokers, headbands, and har bows using the same trims, laces, and rhinestones you used on your dress.
